因為罹患口咽癌，放下手邊所有的工作，專心養病，他還戲謔自己說：我終於可以靜下心來讀自己想讀的書，看想看的電影，想聽的音樂。一旦成為名人，做自己，竟然成了奢侈與揮霍了。
《神鬼獵人》就是他大病初癒之後的最新作品，電影中聽見《神鬼獵人》男主角Leonardo DiCaprio的那兩句經典台詞：「 As long as you can still grab a breath, you fight. You breathe... keep breathing.只要一息尚存，就要拚，呼吸，繼續呼吸...」以及「I ain't afraid to die anymore. I'd done it already.我再也不怕死了，我已經死過一回了。」我相信坂本從讀劇本到看到毛片時的感受一定比我們更強。所以他才會用長音，註記者死神的腳步聲；再用短促的重音，標識著死神的毃門聲......天地恾茫，悠悠我心。
